Why should you be interested in my life?
There’s NO reason.

I’m not famous, glamorous, nor rich.
I’m an ordinary 70-ish man who is curious each morning about what’s going to hurt today that didn’t hurt yesterday.
My wife Channa and I like walking in the mountains of the Blue Ridge.
I don’t walk old—but sometimes I think I ought to, given my right foot, the way it is. Who knew this right-foot thing was going to happen when I started being 70-ish?
Just…ordinary.

So—just who do I think I am to write books about my life and publish them?
I write fiction for fun. But I am called—even compelled—to write memoirs.
Three forces compel me. They are--
  1. To honor my father and mother—and my background in general. Who and what made me what I am?
  2. To honor my wife’s and my willingness to change—no matter how settled we have become into routine. How and why did we Jews become Christian?
  3. To honor God by writing in such an engaging and light-hearted way that some other Christians step forward and tell their stories about Him back to me. So we each get to know Him better—for His glory.

I get notes from readers saying, “That happened to me, too.”
I write back, and sometimes we build a relationship of depth and beauty.
I believe relationships of depth and beauty is essential for our humanness.
I believe it because I am a religiously oriented man.
Not everyone is. That’s okay. We can still be friends.

Life can be dire, without relationships of depth and beauty.
A friend, who should know, told me this.
What this friend told me is that during the thirty years of his clinical therapy practice with married couples, many of them report that scarcely ever has one spouse looked the other in the eye and asked, “How do you feel?”
And meant it.

Imagine that!
That stinks.
What a lonesome world some of us make.

How can a memoir help make relationships?
Of course, a memoir is about its author.
But a well-crafted and literarily successful memoir ought to engage its reader by evoking experiences that the reader has had and that are important to the reader.

I write memoirs to help seekers come closer to God. First I remember, then I organize, then I craft my scenes and conversations and revelations so that they might resonate with you, too. That’s the art part.

And so you and I find an avenue on which to walk toward one another.
